On the recent on-field altercation between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir

Both of them (Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli) are mature and should understand that youngsters look up to them. So, they should take more responsibility. I don’t know who is right or wrong since I didn’t watch (the incident) but as ambassadors of cricket, they must show respect towards the game. Millions of people are watching them, and they should do something that people can be proud of.

On why he loves coming to Ahmedabad

During the ’80s, Ahmedabad was a growing city and it has really evolved. I was at SG Highway, which had almost nothing earlier, but it is now one of the most visited spots in the city. I like the city’s vibe and people here are warm and respectful.

On how he takes care of his diet and fitness

I keep things simple and eat everything in moderation. I don’t follow any fancy diet. One should just eat healthy and simple food. As you grow old, your food intake should be moderate. With age, excessive workouts aren’t good either.

On fitness goals of cricketers

The current Indian cricketers are fit, but I don’t know much about their routines. Everybody is different and things become easier when you know your body. While we tend to follow what the fittest person is doing, it’s important to do things as per your body’s needs and response.

On his favourite career moments

My favourite moment remains the day I first played for India. It is bigger and more precious than even winning the World Cup. All the other things, including becoming the Indian captain, don’t come close to the moment when I started playing for India. Of course, winning the 1983 World Cup remains the other favourite moment.

On why he doesn’t believe today’s cricketers are under more pressure

To me, playing cricket is not pressure. If I am representing my country, I am enjoying it. When you love something, you cannot feel pressure. These days, people make it sound like there’s too much pressure. Well, don’t play if you are feeling the pressure! Sports is all about enjoying and loving what you do. Playing a sport is a choice you make.

On his advice for budding cricketers

Youngsters should have the passion for playing cricket. Don’t try to become a cricketer overnight; it takes time and you must go through the grind to shine for a longer period. The more you work hard, the better you will be, and your performances will speak for you.
