Remember the first 12-inch MacBook? Well, it is obsolete now. Feels old, right? So, if you have it with you, you can no longer avail of repair or service at Apple Stores or Apple Apple Authorised Service Providers.
The 12-inch MacBook was released in March 2015. It had a wedge shape design, weighing less than a kilogram. The starting price was Rs 99,000 in India, and it came with a 1.1GHz dual-core Intel Core M processor, integrated Intel HD 5300 graphics, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD as its standard specifications.
The 12-inch MacBook had a single USB-C port that served for both charging and data transfer, a new Force Touch trackpad, and a unique battery design that allows for a bigger battery to fit into the notebook’s slim body.
This model may qualify for an extended battery-only repair period that lasts up to 10 years from the date the product was last distributed for sale, thus till 2026.
The original 12-inch MacBook Air was soon replaced by the second-gen model in 2016, which is now on the list of vintage Macs.
The 12-inch MacBook was the first MacBook model to have Apple’s butterfly switch keyboard design. However, this design was problematic and led to frequent failure. After several complaints and lawsuits, the butterfly keyboard was removed from the entire MacBook lineup.
According to Apple, a product is considered obsolete 7 years after it was discontinued.
The first iteration of the 12-inch MacBook was discontinued in April 2016 as the new model arrived. Now, it has become obsolete, having completed the seven-year mark.
The last update for the 12-inch MacBook was in June 2017, and it was discontinued in July 2019.
Apple has declared the stainless steel models of the Apple Watch Series 2 as vintage, joining the previously classified aluminium Series 2 models.
