Apple’s next watch may be its most powerful ever: What to expect – Times of India

While Apple’s next watch – Apple Watch Series 9 – may not be in for cosmetic changes, it is expected to undergo some significant changes in terms of usability. First, there were rumours of watchOS 10 coming with some new features, and now rumour has it that the Watch Series 9 could have a new chip.
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, on his Discord channel, shared that a “new processor” will power the Apple Watch Series 9. The chip, alleged to be known as the S9 chip, will be based on the A15 Bionic, Gurman notes.
It has been two generations since the Apple Watch last received a chip upgrade. You may say that the Watch Series 8 has an S8 chip and Series 7 also has an S7 chip, but these are the same as the S6 chip that we saw inside the Apple Watch Series 6. So, there have been no major improvements – neither in terms of speed nor efficiency. Since they all have been based on the three-year-old A13 Bionic chip, the one inside the iPhone 11.
For some context, the A15 Bionic powers the iPhone 13 lineup. The chip is built on the 5nm node process of TSMC and features a 6-core CPU and 16-core neural engine.
While it is unclear how much difference would the new chip bring to the Apple Watch Series 9, we could still expect some performance and efficiency gains.
Previously, Gurman said he believes that watchOS 10, which is expected to arrive this fall, will introduce a “fairly extensive upgrade — with notable changes to the user interface.”
watchOS 10 could bring over the widgets from iPhone to Apple Watch, making it the “central part” of the whole experience.
Apart from these changes, the Apple Watch Series 9 is said not to have any major design changes so it may look the same as the last generations.
