Apple takes down popular fake ChatGPT from the App Store – Times of India

The money-making stint of the top ChatGPT imposter, “ChatGPT Chat GPT AI With GPT-3,” has finally come to an end. In yesterday’s report, we talked about this app and how it was scamming people using the name of OpenAI’s chatbot. Now, it turns out that the suspicious app has apparently been taken down by the App Store.
Not only had the copycat app used ChatGPT’s name to gain downloads, but it had also managed to scam people into shelling out money via in-app purchases. That seems more inappropriate when you realise the real one is available free of cost on chat.openai.com.

Too late, too little?
Although the scam app is down now, it alarmingly stayed up long enough to gain over 12K reviews and a solid rating of 4.4 out of 5, courtesy of its ability to answer simple and direct questions well. Moreover, it also managed to rank among the top apps in the Productivity category.
Going by the sheer number of reviews, we can guess that many users would have fallen into the pit and paid for the fake ChatGPT app’s premium subscription. And, the scarier fact is that still, the App Store isn’t completely rid of such scams. There are several more imposter apps that are benefiting by unethically using ChatGPT’s name, and selling in-app subscriptions.

Play Store also has ChatGPT copycats
However, these sketchy apps aren’t endemic to iOS since Android’s Play Store has its fair share of duplicates cashing in on ChatGPT’s popularity. These Android ones can also be identified using the aforementioned tips.
With one major imposter out of the way, we may expect more to follow soon. But the true effect of the ban will depend on how quickly the world’s leading app storefronts react. Filtering such scam apps in a short time will prevent users, who trust these stores, from having a poor experience.
