Apple may not unveil mixed reality headset at WWDC 2023 – Times of India

Now that Apple has announced dates for this year’s WorldWide Developers’ Conference, speculation is rife about what the company may showcase. Top of the rumour list is a mixed reality headset, which Apple has been reportedly developing for a few years now.
However, it looks like there might be further delays in the arrival of the handset. According to noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, there’s uncertainty about the device making an appearance at WWDC 2023.

Apple unsure about ‘iPhone moment’

In a tweet, Kuo said that the production schedule of the headset has been pushed back. Kuo said, “because Apple isn’t very optimistic about the AR/MR headset announcement recreating the astounding “iPhone moment,” the mass production schedule for assembly has been pushed back by another 1-2 months to mid-to-late 3Q23.”
The delay, as per Kuo, makes it uncertain if Apple could give a first look at the device at WWDC. “Furthermore, due to the delay in mass production for assembly, the shipment forecast this year is only 200,000 to 300,000 units, lower than the market consensus of 500,000 units or more,” he said in a tweet.
Kuo also explained why Apple isn’t being very optimistic right now. High cost price, economic downturn and the timing, all could be the reasons behind the further delay. “The main concerns for Apple not being very optimistic regarding the market feedback to the AR/MR headset announcement include the economic downturn, compromises on some hardware specifications for mass production (such as weight), the readiness of the ecosystem and applications, a high selling price (USD 3,000-4,000 or even higher), etc,” said Kuo in a tweet.
WWDC is set to get underway from June 5 till June 9. Apple is expected to showcase new versions of its operating systems for iPhone, iPad, Watch, Mac and TV.
