apple: Epic Games CEO says Google is ‘crazy’ and Apple needs to be ‘stopped’ – Times of India

Epic Games — creator of the wildly popular Fortnite — has been in a battle with two of the world’s biggest companies — Apple and Google. With Apple, Epic Games didn’t want to pay the Apple ‘tax’ — a percentage goes to Apple on the in-app purchases — and the battle is ongoing in court. According to a report by Bloomberg, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has spoken about the ‘issues’ with Apple and Google.
Speaking at a conference in Seoul, Sweeney said that Apple has different laws for different countries and it needs to be stopped. “Apple complies with oppressive foreign laws, which surveil users and deprive them of political rights. But Apple is ignoring laws passed by Korea’s democracy. Apple must be stopped,” said Sweeney. Sweeney didn’t say but the obvious reference point is China and how Apple has different rules there.
On Google, Sweeney said that how the tech giant charges fees on payments on the Play Store which it doesn’t process is “crazy”.
The report by Bloomberg also states that Sweeney said how the world needs a single app store. “What the world really needs now is a single store that works with all platforms,” Sweeney said in an interview. “Right now software ownership is fragmented between the iOS App Store, the Android Google Play marketplace, different stores on Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch, and then Microsoft Store and the Mac App Store,” he added.
Sweeney was speaking at a conference in South Korea, which recently passed a law that allows use of third-party payment on platforms like Apple App Store and Google Play Store. There was a deadline, which Apple reportedly missed, to comply with the new South Korean law.
