Amid defections to SP: Ahead of Amit Shah’s likely visit, BJP exudes confidence
Party insiders said those who have defected were worried about the growing leadership of their caste within BJP and many of them were not considered for the party ticket in the upcoming assembly elections. BJP has announced 105 candidates for the first two phases of election out of which 83 candidates won last time. The leadership is quite confident of winning 83 seats again in the 2022 elections. Senior leaders feel that the Muslim-Jat combination as discussed by the opposition SP and RLD is not going to happen this time too like 2014, 2017 and 2019 and BJP will not face a setback in West UP. The leadership expressed confidence that the winning atmosphere will become stronger after voting in the first two phases, where BJP will retain its position.
BJP is also confident of a stronger performance in Bundelkhand and Kanpur region where the party had won almost all the seats in 2017.
The party will declare all its candidates for the two phases of election this month. As per sources, winnability will be the main criteria for the BJP ticket. A lot of party leaders are demanding tickets for their family members. But the party is not in a mood to accommodate these requests as it would follow the formula of one ticket in one family. However, sitting MLAs, who are also family members of leaders, will get the ticket.
SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav’s daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav is in touch with BJP and is likely to join the party. However, the leadership is clear that any suggestion from her to give a ticket to someone will not be entertained.
In West Bengal last year, BJP had fielded several MPs in the assembly elections. According to sources, this will not happen in UP.
Sources claim that Union home minister Amit Shah will take the commanding position in the party campaign and will tour the entire state post January 22. He will formulate campaign strategy. Under his leadership, the party had registered strong performance in 2014, 2017 and 2019 elections. With Shah’s involvement, the party leaders are hoping to repeat the performance of 2017.
