Update July 18th, 5:30 PM: A spokesperson for Air India reached out to 91mobiles and clarified that reports of a smartphone exploding are false. A passenger reported that their power bank was malfunctioning, which caused a delay in the flight taking off. No smartphone exploded. The flight took off for Delhi post the precautionary check.

Original story follows…

An Air India flight aborted its takeoff after a passenger’s smartphone exploded inside the plane, India Today reports. This was a Delhi-bound flight from Udaipur, and the explosion took happened just as the plane was about to take from the runway, but the flight could make its way back after an hour of the incident.

The Air India flight was taking off from Udaipur’s Dabok Airport for Delhi. This is where the smartphone of a passenger exploded, as per multiple reports. There’s no information though on what phone it was, and from which brand. There were no injuries or casualties reported inside the plane which had a total of 140 passengers. After the pilot aborted the takeoff, some of the passengers were reportedly deplaned. Post the incident, the plane was examined, and it could take off within an hour for Delhi.

Some reports have claimed that the Delhi-bound flight made an emergency landing. However, a Twitter user named Chandrashekhar Sardesai claimed that his friend was in the same flight and reiterated that the Air India flight never took off from the runway. The explosion took place when the plane was still in taxi, and it took off only after the matter was cleared. The incident taking place mid-air has been falsely reported, but the explosion did take place.

Smartphone explosions aren’t a new thing to hear of anymore, which shouldn’t be the case. The cause of these explosions are usually due to faulty batteries or phones overheating. In some cases, the explosion is a small one not causing any fatal injury to the person involved. But there have been reports of cases where the person suffers burns due to the explosion.
