AIIMS directs clinical departments to increase ICU/HDU beds in institute

NEW DELHI: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) authorities have directed all its clinical departments to create their own small Intensive care unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU) within their wards as the percentage of such beds in the institute is less than 10 percent.

All clinical departments were requested to submit their projections for augmentation of ICU and HDU beds for this year by February 28.

An office memorandum issued by the director Prof M Srinivas on Wednesday, stated that the number of ICU/HDU beds is contemplated to rise above 30 percent after the implementation of AIIMS masterplan.

However, at present there is a requirement to make an effort to increase critical care capacity by converting a few existing ward beds to ICU and HDU beds. This will also help transition to a higher critical care capacity in a graded manner.

All clinical departments have been directed to optimise space planning within the existing wards, efficient utilisation of existing human resources by implementing task shifting and sharing approach. Besides, optimally utilising existing medical equipment and procuring new medical equipment if required by projecting the same in the department budget for FY 2023-24.
