AI helps state police nab 87 ‘solvers’ using unfair means during govt job exam – Times of India

Artificial Intelligence(AI) has gained a lot of traction since Microsoft-backed OpenAI launched its generative AI model, ChatGPT in 2022. The technology has not only been appreciated for its capability to reduce human workload but has also been criticised for the extent to which it can be misused by criminals. This technology has now helped the police to catch ‘fraud’ candidates who were found using unfair means during a government exam.
An advanced AI-based face recognition software has helped Uttar Pradesh Police to arrest 87 candidates who are suspected of cheating in a government recruitment exam. Police officials have said that these candidates appeared for the exam at centres across the state. The maximum number of suspects were arrested in Lucknow (11). Meanwhile, a total of 12 were nabbed in Noida and Ghaziabad districts, near Delhi.
‘Solvers’ gang arrested for taking up unfair means in govt exam
The ones who got arrested were dummy candidates who were part of the alleged ‘solvers’ gang. The accused members of the gang fraudulently appeared for the exam that recruits Gram Vikas Adhikari (Village Development Officer) for the Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC) using unfair means.
According to police officials, the alleged gang members were nabbed from different parts of the state including Aligarh, Kanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Mirzapur, Agra and Jhansi among others.
The police have also confirmed that suitable legal action will be taken in all these cases in the respective districts. FIRs on charges of cheating, forgery and using unfair means during state-held public examinations have already been filed against the ones who have been arrested.

How AI helped police
“By using advanced Artificial Intelligence-based face recognition software and technology deployed by UPSSSC and with active support and help of Special Task Force and district as well as local police administration, as many as 87 ‘solvers’ (including a female) were caught,” special director general of police, law and order, Prashant Kumar said
“All out efforts were made by UPSSSC to ensure the purity and sanctity of the exam. A close watch and monitoring of the exam were done at UPSSSC level with live streaming of all exam-related activities at all the centres,” Kumar added.
The exams were held at 737 examination centres in 20 districts of the state.
