Abhay Deol has unveiled the first trailer of his upcoming project, Trial By Fire – a Netflix original based on the real life Uphar cinema tragedy. Trial By Fire will premiere on January 13, Friday. (Also read: Preity Zinta, Abhay Deol celebrate ‘dimpavali’ together)
At least 100 people were injured and 59 died in a fire at the Uphaar Cinema in 1997. The trailer opens with a warm and cosy home with the mom bidding her goodbyes to her kids as they leave for a cinema outing. Soon, we get to see the horrors of the fire in the cinema hall. Next, Abhay and Rajshri Deshpande are seen as struggling parents fighting the worst war of any parent’s life – the fight for justice after their kids’ death.
The trailer does not come across as angry or full of any kind of suspense. Instead, it has a calm tone that is reminiscent of Meghna Gulzar’s Talvar.
Trial By Fire will showcase the trials and tribulations of the families of victims of the Uphar tragedy as they sought justice. It is based on Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy’s book Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale of the Uphaar Fire Tragedy.
Abhay shared the trailer on Instagram and wrote, “The trailer is here! 13 June, 1997 altered the lives of hundreds of families. #TrialByFire traces the story of parents, Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, who alongside other families have fought for justice. Catch their story in #TrialByFire, releasing January 13 only on @netflix_in.”
Prashant Nair has directed Trial By Fire that is produced by Endemol Shine India and House of Talkies. Abhay and Rajshri play the lead couple in Trial By Fire that also features Anupam Kher, Ratna Pathak Shah, Shilpa Shukla, Ashish Vidyarthi, Rajesh Tailang, and Shardul Bharadwaj.
Talking about Trial By Fire, Prashant Nair said in a press statement, “Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy are inspiring examples of the kind of resilience and fortitude it takes to move the needle even slightly in this country.”
He added, “What happened to them and the way they have been forced to fight for justice is truly horrific and, unfortunately, there are countless other people today in similar situations. We are grateful to Netflix for being such courageous partners in telling this story.”
