800 homes approved for Jerusalem urban renewal project

183 apartments in Gilo will be demolished to make way for 800 apartments in four towers with commercial premises on the ground floor.


The Jerusalem Local Planning and Building Committee last week approved an urban renewal plan for the Gilo neighborhood. In the plan, along Rosmarin Street between Halevona and Hamor Streets, 183 apartment in four-floor blocks will be demolished and replaced by 800 apartments in two 35-floor towers and two 17-floor towers.

As part of the plan, the ground floors of the towers along Rosmarin Street, where the Jerusalem light rail Green Line will run, have been zoned for commercial or office use.

The plan is being developed by the Jerusalem Municipality urban renewal department and the design is by architect Yehuda Feigin.

Gilo was built in the early 1970s in southeast Jerusalem near the Arab village of Beit Jalla. The neighborhood currently has 32,000 residents and the new masterplan approved 10 years ago allows for the addition of thousands of apartments through clear and rebuild urban renewal projects.
