Indore: Around half of posts of doctors cadre with the health department in Madhya Pradesh are lying vacant, showed annual report 2022-23. The report suggested that the department had a cumulative vacancy of 4632 posts against sanctioned strength of 9276 as on January 31 this year.

Of those, a maximum 2471 posts (68.29 per cent) of 3618 medical specialist posts are vacant in Madhya Pradesh, showed the report. In the case of medical officers (MBBS doctors), and dentists the vacancy is 1719 (33.72 per cent) and 442 (78.78 per cent) respectively, the report showed.

MP Medical Officers Association pesident Dr Madhav Hasnani said, “There is an urgent need of policy correction to attract doctors to Madhya Pradesh.”

The emoluments paid to a doctor serving in state should be at par with national level along with providing career progression scheme for timely promotions and salary hike, demanded Hasnani.

Health commissioner Dr Sudam Khade told to a news agency, “In the last two years, the department has filled around 52 per cent of vacancies. In the case of specialists, the vacancy was very high at around 85 per cent, which is now reduced through promotions and direct recruitment.”

“The state government has given promotions to around 1500 doctors to specialist posts in Madhya Pradesh and recruitment process for 888 specialist posts is going on. Of those, 400 are appointed and the process for rest is on,” said Dr Khade.

The annual report for 2019-20 showed that the vacancies for specialists were at 2855, 1508 for medical officer and 77 for dentist. So, except specialist posts, the vacancies against medical officer and dentist posts increased in Madhya Pradesh, showed annual reports.

“The department further gets around 1400 doctors through bond systems. These doctors are however not counted in the regular numbers, but the services are provided to the residents through this. So, the gap is almost filled in the state,” added Dr Khade.

“The government is also recruiting around 1400 posts of medical officers. The process is on and after all of them join the number would improve,” claimed Dr Khade.
