Lucknow: After facing delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and working to implement over 400 improvement recommendations, Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) recently completed a rigorous four-year journey to obtain the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) accreditation.

Institute director Soniya Nityanand said that the medical institute began its pursuit of NABH accreditation in 2019. However, the process encountered unexpected obstacles due to the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic. Therefore, the pre-accreditation visit took place in 2022. The team gave 400 recommendations which were related to patient and staff safety, OPD waiting time, feedback, fire safety and staff satisfaction.

In an effort to address these recommendations, RMLIMS established a dedicated quality cell, responsible for conducting regular audits and implementing quality improvement programmes.

Prof Nityanand said, “The institute made relentless efforts to enhance patient safety. We introduced various patient safety initiatives, including the implementation of patient identification bands, safety measures during patient transport and the establishment of emergency codes and protocols.”

The accreditation process involved two additional inspections in 2023, with the second inspection conducted in April resulting in 88 recommendations.

In-charge of NABH affairs, Prof Smita Chauhan said, “We prioritised continuous training and education programmes for its paramedical staff and residents. We ensured that medical personnel remain updated with the latest advancements in healthcare practices.”

Prof Chauhan also highlighted the establishment of a robust grievance redressal and patient feedback mechanism. This initiative aimed to provide a platform for patients and their families to voice their concerns, thereby enabling the institute to address any issues promptly and effectively.

Medical superintendent of RMLIMS, Prof Vikram Singh attributed the success to unwavering commitment to meeting NABH standards across various domains.
