Zoom, the video conferencing service, will have to pay its users $85 million as a part of a class-action lawsuit settlement.
The video conferencing platform was accused of providing misleading information about its end-to-end encryption on the platform and in a security white paper. Along with that, it was also accused of providing users’ data to Facebook and Google without permission without their consent.
According to a report by ArsTechnica, the lawsuit was filed at the US District Court for the Northern District of California and the video conferencing platform has agreed to pay $85 million as a complaint settlement amount.
All Zoom users including the free and paid both are eligible to receive the settlement amount worldwide if they were a Zoom account holder between March 30, 2016, and July 30, 2021. If this settlement amount is approved by the court then Zoom paid users will receive 15% of what they’ve paid for Zoom’s core meeting features during the given timeframe or $25 whichever is greater. Free users are eligible to make the claim of $15 from the company.
Apart from the settlement amount, Zoom has also agreed to work on improving the security and privacy of the platform, which includes safeguarding consumer data, bolster privacy disclosure and meeting security.
