Video conferencing platform Zoom has announced a new feature for Windows and MacOS users. According to the company’s blog, the platform will now add automatic update feature to the platform. The feature will help users to get the new tools and bug fixes automatically when they are released by the company. The company regularly releases new updates to address the vulnerabilities and fix the bugs, but a lot of users skip these updates which makes them vulnerable to cyber attacks.
With this feature, the company can ensure that the users have the latest version of the app installed. As per Zoom, automatic updates will be enabled by default for most individual users. When enabled, users will have the opportunity to opt-out of automatic updates for their desktop client after the first install or first update where this feature is present. Users can also change this preference at any time by checking or unchecking “Automatically keep my Zoom up to date” under Zoom > Settings > General.
The company has also revealed that If the Zoom client has downloaded the update but you decline to install it when prompted, the update will automatically install the next time the Zoom client is restarted.
Recently, Zoom also announced that it is piloting showing ads to the users who don’t pay for the services. According to the company, only free Basic users in certain countries will see these ads if they join meetings that are hosted by other free Basic users. The company revealed that ads will be rolled out only on the browser page once users end their meeting and a banner on the website will provide a link that will take them to the cookie management tool. The company also updated the Privacy Statement to account for this advertising program. The company claims that it will not use meeting, webinar, or messaging content (specifically, audio, video, files, and messages) for any marketing, promotions, or third-party advertising purposes.
