Xiaomi is letting go of the ‘Mi’ brand from its wide range of products. The company will now present its products under the parent branding of Xiaomi. However, the existing products will still bear the Mi brand name and will continue to sell in the market. The report comes after Xiaomi has ranked as the number one smartphone brand.

Xiaomi has a huge portfolio of products under Mi ranging from smartphones to smart home products to personal accessories to electronics. Though India has seen a limited number of Mi sub-brand devices.

Farewell of Mi from Xaomi

This new report comes after Xiaomi launched MIX 4 earlier on August 10 without the Mi prefix. The company, however, didn’t mention the reason and it was just a hint then. Now, XDA-Developers reported that Xiaomi is all prepped to brandish its upcoming devices under the Xiaomi moniker.

Xiaomi has differentiated its range of smartphones into two sections – affordable and premium. The former falls under the Redmi sub-brand, and the company has been doing well while holding the major market share in the budget range. Meanwhile, under the roof of Mi too, the manufacturer has established a reputable position in the mobile industry with a lineup of flagship devices.

Mi’s Journey as a sub-brand

Its been a long journey for Mi since it has first made its debut with Xiaomi’s MIUI back in 2010 followed by the first smartphone Mi 1 later in 2011. The Mi 1 was a flagship device featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 processor integrated with Adreno 220 GPU and 1GB RAM. The phone had a 4-inch TFT touchscreen display, a 1930mAh battery, an 8MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera, and ran on MIUI under the skin of Android 2.3.

Since the Chinese giant has not revealed its clear intentions of getting rid of the Mi sub-brand, it will be interesting to know if the company will follow the same strategy for India and the rest of its global market.
