New Delhi: To make access to sanitary napkins easy and to create awareness about women’s health, at least 14 vending machines along with incinerators were installed across AIIMS campus on Saturday to commemorate the World Menstrual hygiene awareness day on Sunday. The machines were installed by HLL, said officials.
On this occasion, prof and head of obstetric and gynaecology dept Dr Neerja Bhatla called for breaking the stigma about menstrual cycles and the need to create awareness about it.
“Poor menstrual hygiene or not choosing clean and right products during periods can lead to severe health risks including reproductive or urinary tract infection which may cause severe health complications in future,” she said, adding that everyone should have basic information about menstruation including men and boys.
She added that it is important to understand that menstruation is a completely natural and universal phenomenon associated with normal female reproduction. The major issue is menstruation is associated with shame for many and it prevents them from speaking out or obtaining timely care for medical problems. “In order to ensure menstruation awareness among women, we need to create a supportive environment for them, where they can open up about it and talk without hesitation,” she said.
According to officials, three sanitary napkins will be available by putting a coin of Rs 10 and once used, the same can be disposed off in the incinerator for eco-friendly disposal. These vending machines and incinerators are installed in patient care and student areas— New Rajkumari Amrit Kaur OPD’s ground floor (2), Mother & Child Block’s ground floor (3) surgery block’s ground floor (1), IRCH’s ground floor (2), CNC’s ground Floor (1), RPC’s ground floor (1), emergency (1), trauma centre patient waiting area (1), library (1) and and PG hostel number 9 (1).
