Microsoft has updated its Windows Subsystem for Android with a new tool. With this tool, Windows 11 users will be able to share files with Android devices. The latest update also includes support for drag and drop along with some camera improvements and the usual bug fixes. However, the update is currently available only for all Windows Insiders.
In a blog post, the Windows Subsystem for Android team has explained: “We’ve been listening to the community, and many of you have been asking us to support sharing files between Windows and the Subsystem. We are pleased to announce that Windows Subsystem for Android can now share your Windows user folders, likeDocuments and Pictures, with the Subsystem, so scenarios like uploading a photo to a social media app or editing a video in a creative app work seamlessly.”
File sharing for Windows Subsystem for Android: Availability
Microsoft has already rolled out this feature for all Windows Insider channels. This suggests that file-sharing support is expected to arrive for all Windows 11 users in the coming weeks. The company usually doesn’t release Windows updates to the Release Preview channel until they’re ready for roll out.
File sharing for Windows Subsystem for Android: How will it work
Windows 11 preview users already have folder sharing enabled by default. Android apps can only view or edit Windows files with the user’s permission. For doing this, Android apps need to show a permission request dialogue. Users can also revoke these permissions from settings.

Microsoft will also scan all Android apps during installation with Microsoft Defender

or any other antivirus software available in the system. This will prevent malicious apps from being loaded into your PC.
Moreover, Microsoft is also restricting the file-sharing support to the Windows user profile folders. This includes the usual files like — documents, photos and videos folders. Users won’t be allowed to share Windows system folders, external drives, or folders like Program Files with this feature. Microsoft will also block users from sharing certain file types like .exe.
