Eight-times Wimbledon champion Roger Federer battled past fellow veteran Richard Gasquet 7-6(1), 6-1, 6-4 in an entertaining encounter on Centre Court to move into the third round for the 18th time in his career. Nick Kyrgios, playing in his first tournament since the Australian Open, also progressed with a straight-sets win, overcoming Italian Gianluca Mager 7-6(7), 6-4, 6-4.

Federer in Wimbledon 3rd round for 18th time

Roger Federer got his old sparkle back on Centre Court to eclipse Richard Gasquet and become the oldest man to reach the third round at Wimbledon in 46 years. The 39-year-old Swiss took a while to find his timing and needed to save three break points in his first service game.

But having been pushed into a tiebreak, the 20-time Grand Slam champion flicked the switch and his game began to flow. After taking the opener the sixth seed moved smoothly through the gears and Gasquet could not live with him as he suffered an 11th successive defeat against Federer.

Next up for the Swiss will be in-form British 29th seed Cameron Norrie who thrashed Australian Alex Bolt.

Kerber gets past Sara in 2nd round

Former Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber needed 3 hours, 19 minutes to get past unseeded Sara Sorribes Tormo 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 in the second round.

The two players traded blows in a match that saw 15 breaks of serve, including seven in the final set.

Kerber finished with 47 winners and just as many unforced errors. The German won Wimbledon in 2018 and has three Grand Slam titles overall. Sorribes Tormo has never been past the second round at a major.
