HIGHLIGHTS
- Wimbledon 2021 has currently been witnessing 50 percent crowd
- This marks the first full outdoor stadiums at a sporting event in the UK since the pandemic
- The likes of Federer and Djokovic have expressed delight at playing in front of crowds
The All England Lawn Tennis Championship (AELTC) said on Sunday that 100 percent crowd will be allowed to attend Wimbledon 2021 matches from the quarter-final stages of the grass-court Grand Slam at the center court and Court 1.
The quarter-final action will get underway from Wednesday with the women’s singles finals to be held on Saturday. The men’s singles final will highlight the second Sunday’s action at Wimbledon.
The return of 100 percent crowd will also mark the first full outdoor stadiums at a sporting event in the UK since the Covid-19 pandemic began. Currently, Wimbledon is operating with 50 percent capacity. Notably, Wimbledon returned to the tennis calendar in 2021 after being cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic last year.
“Following the successful staging of the first week of The Championships, as agreed with the Government’s Events Research Programme and in consultation with our Local Authority in Merton, the AELTC is pleased to confirm that Centre and No.1 Court will feature 100% capacity crowds for the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Finals,” Wimbledon organisers said in a statement.
“This marks the first full outdoor stadiums at a sporting event in the UK since the pandemic began. The capacity of Centre Court is 14,979, and the capacity of No.1 Court is 12,345. Capacity across the rest of the Grounds will be reduced according to the number of courts in play,” it added.
Ticket holders will continue to be required to show proof of their Covid-19 status on arrival. The spectators will also be required to wear face coverings when moving in the stands and across the AELTC.
Notably, 8-time champion Roger Federer and defending champion Novak Djokovic were among the many who expressed delight to play in front of fans at Wimbledon amid the pandemic.
“After 18 months of rehabbing and performing behind closed doors, playing on Centre Court to a passionate crowd makes it all worth it. Thank you,” Federer had said in a social media post.
