WhatsApp link with bug causes app to crash on Android phones

WhatsApp link bug

This was first spotted and shared by ethical hacker ‘Brute Bee’ on Twitter who pointed out the link and why it’s causing WhatsApp to crash. The URL is ‘wa.me/settings’ which is a shortened link for WhatsApp’s native settings page but this now has a bug which will cause the app to crash. So if you open any individual or group chat that has this link, your WhatsApp will crash. It is reportedly affecting WhatsApp Business users as well but iPhone users are safe from it.

We haven’t independently verified it but according to a report by Android Police, the link causes WhatsApp to crash instantly but it also restarts normally later. But on opening the chat again, the same issue will occur.

How to fix WhatsApp link bug

The simplest fix would be to, well, not open the chat but if there’s anyone close but cruel enough to send you this link then there is actually a workaround. You can open WhatsApp on the web and delete the particular message with the link from that chat. This way the link will disappear and you can open the chat and use WhatsApp normally.

Considering how popular and widely used WhatsApp is, and the speed at which spam travels in this app, you might just receive the link. One thing to not do for sure is to not send the link but if you do receive it then you can follow the above mentioned steps to avoid the app crash.
