WhatsApp is working on a new plan to solve its ‘scam problem’ – Times of India

0
WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging platforms. Its popularity has also made it one of the prime targets of scammers who try to seek unauthorised access to user accounts. For added security, the Meta-owned instant messaging service offers two-step verification. However, most users don’t usually enable this feature for their accounts. In some cases, users accidentally share their 6-digit two-factor passcode with hackers or cyber criminals.
According to a report in WABetaInfo, the messaging platform is now developing a new feature called the login approval prompts which is aimed to make the platform more secure by keeping fraudsters at bay. The report also claims that the upcoming feature is still under development and there is no information about when it will be made available to the general public. However, the report mentions that this feature will arrive on WhatsApp’s beta channel on the Play Store before getting a wider rollout.

How will this upcoming security feature work
As per the report, this security feature will show a login prompt on the current device when users try to move their WhatsApp account to a new device in the upcoming days. Users have to approve the request to initiate the device transfer process.
Moreover, if a scammer tries to access a WhatsApp account from a new device, the account holder can deny such requests. The report also mentions that the login prompt window is also expected to show other important details like — the time and device details from which the request was sent.
The report also suggests that the device login approval window might eventually replace WhatsApp’s current SMS-based login process. The current SMS-based login procedure can be used as a safety net for users to fall back on when they don’t have access to their existing devices in the upcoming days. WhatsApp might also integrate this feature with its upcoming companion mode that will allow users to access their accounts on a secondary phone or tablet.

Other meta-owned platforms including — Facebook and Instagram already come with a similar login feature where users need to authorise logins to a new device from their existing phone, the report states.
Apart from this feature, WhatsApp is also working on several new tools to improve the platform’s overall user experience and compete with other rivals like — Signal and Telegram. Some of these features which are under development include — exporting Google Drive backups, undoing deleted chats and a way to check users who leave a group chat among others.
