Since the Washington Family’s stewardship in pre-Revolutionary War times, Clifton has always been a prestigious country estate.

“It’s a very short drive from D.C., but when you get to Clifton, you’re so secluded and private,” said Scott Shuman of Hall and Hall Auctions. “It’s beautiful and quiet, and you can jump in a car and 40 minutes later be flying out of Dulles International Airport.”

A 411-acre Virginia farm that once belonged to close family members of George Washington is heading for auction on Wednesday, September 14th at 4:00 PM. Known as Clifton, the property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and was once owned by Warner Washington, a first cousin of George Washington, who is believed to have spent significant time on the property, as well. Located on the north end of the Shenandoah Valley, the estate has expansive views, pastures and rolling hills, and is approximately one hour away from Washington, D.C.

In addition to the stately four-bedroom manor house, there’s a fully restored three-bedroom stone house from 1844 on the property, plus a farmhouse with three bedrooms. Extensive farm facilities include multiple barns, three silos and a farm office. The estate has recently served as a functioning farm as well as a vacation rental and event venue.

“It’s a business opportunity. You’re going to come here to either farm, or start some kind of wine or beer venue that is open to the public,” said seller Brent Mercke, a businessman, who purchased the property in 2014. “It’s got panoramic views, a refurbished historic structure and there’s a lot of history here. People drive up the winding path to the house, and they’re awestruck.”

Confederate General Stonewall Jackson quartered his cavalry in one of Clifton’s barns during the Civil War, and the manor house was also the headquarters of General John Mosby’s Confederate army in August 1864. Later, the Union General Phil Sheridan would direct area maneuvers from the farm.

Over the past eight years, Mr. Mercke has updated the property’s pool complex, added a tennis court and paved the roads, among other improvements. The previous owners restored the manor house, adding in modern updates while retaining historical details.

“They did a lovely job of restoring the house. They put in all new mechanical systems, plumbing, electric, air conditioning, new kitchens,” Mr. Mercke said. “And it still has all the old original trim. “This house was built by wealthy people,” Mr. Mercke added. “It has big ceilings, a big staircase, a bright, airy voluminous entryway. The rooms are huge.”
