Former India fast bowler Irfan Pathan said Virat Kohli will continue to be a leader in the team despite not being a captain across all formats of the game. Pathan said Kohli will continue contributing to the success of the team while taking a backseat from the leadership group.
Virat Kohli stepped down as India’s Test captain last month, a day after India’s Test series defeat in South Africa. Last year, Kohli stepped down from T20I captaincy before he was sacked as ODI captain. Kohli played as a non-captain for the first time in more than 7 years during the ODI series in South Africa where KL Rahul led the Indian team.

“He is not the captain, but as long as he is in the team, he is a leader, He will help the new captain to do the right thing,” Pathan told The Hindu.
“He (Kohli) sent out the right messages and he took the team’s fitness to another level. Going forward, I am sure he will help out others, especially Rohit Sharma. Every captain contributes in a unique fashion. Kohli had his energy, Rohit will give you calmness,” he added.
Notably, Kohli himself shed light on the idea of playing under other captains, saying he does not need to be the skipper to take up a leadership role in the team.
“See, I think firstly you need to have a complete understanding of what you set out to achieve and whether you have achieved those targets or not. Everything has a tenure and time period, so you have to be aware of it. As a batter, you might be able to give more to the team, so take pride in that,” Kohli said while speaking on an episode of FireSide Chat.
“You do not need to be a captain to be the leader. When MS Dhoni was in the team, it was not like he was not the leader, he was still the guy from whom we wanted to have input.”
The presence of Kohli in the team will be crucial to Indian cricket as the team gears up for the T20 World Cup in 2022 and the 50-over World Cup in 2023.
