Vincent Zhou, who helped the U.S. win silver in the team event, is out of isolation after testing positive.
Vincent Zhou, who helped the U.S. team win silver in the team figure skating event last week, on Tuesday was cleared to return to the Olympics after testing positive for the coronavirus and spending a week in isolation.
Zhou, who finished fifth at the 2018 Olympics, missed celebrating the U.S. team’s silver medal in the team event and also was forced to withdraw from the men’s individual event. As it turns out, no one on his U.S. team received its actual silver medal anyway.
The medals ceremony for the team event was canceled after the Russian skater Kamila Valieva was found to have tested positive for a banned drug before the Olympics. The medalists will receive their awards only once Valieva’s doping case concludes, and that could take months.
“I do hope that Team USA does receive a medal eventually,” Zhou said. “Hopefully it won’t take like four years or so.”
While in isolation, Zhou spent his time in hotel about 30 minutes from the Olympic Village dealing with what he described as a mild cold. He said he was surprised that he had contracted the virus after doing “everything short of moving to Antarctica” to stay away from others.
He was able to exercise and watch Netflix. His film choices reflected the situation that was unfolding at the Olympics while he was stuck inside. Zhou watched the documentary “Icarus,” which describes Russia’s state-run doping scheme at the 2014 Sochi Games.
“It definitely is pretty shocking and is a scary situation we have going on here at the Olympics,” he said. “I would understand completely if the ladies didn’t exactly trust the integrity of the competition and the fairness of everything. I hope that this resolves in the best way possible for all parties involved.”
The men’s event was held without controversy, and Zhou said he didn’t watch it because it was too emotionally painful. His teammate Nathan Chen won the gold medal. Another teammate, Jason Brown, was sixth.
“It also was difficult for me to see the results because I knew I could have medaled,” Zhou said. “It was a difficult day for me.”
It made him feel supported, though, that he continues to receive good wishes, including from the singer Josh Groban. Zhou found Groban’s note especially touching because he performs his short program to one of Groban’s songs.
“That was really, really an awesome moment,” said Zhou, who plans to perform in the figure skating exhibition on Sunday, the final day of the Beijing Games.
