Vadodra: Doctor’s kidney saves man’s lifeVadodara: A kidney of city-based radiologist Dr Narendra Parikh, who was declared brain dead on Saturday, will save the life a 54-year-old Manjalpur resident who was relying on dialysis for the last five years.

Parikh, 65, accidentally fell near the staircase of his house and had suffered serious head injury on May 5. He was rushed to Bhailal Amin General Hospital (BAGH) in a critical condition.

“All the necessary treatments were given at the hospital but he eventually lost the battle for life and the patient was declared brain stem dead,” said a release issued by BAGH. “The family members had complete awareness about organ donation and they offered Dr Parikh’s both the kidneys to the needy patients,” the release further states.

After the hospital acquired the necessary statutory permission from the government, an expert team of doctors comprising nephrologist, cardiothoracic surgeon, vascular surgeon and urologist sprang into action without delay and successfully completed the procedure. “Three patients registered at BAGH were called. Only one patient was having the match. The cadaveric renal transplant of one kidney was successfully carried out on the male patient from Manjalpur,” said nephrologist Dr Kamlesh Parikh.

According to guidelines of the State Organ Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), Dr Parikh’s second kidney was sent to a hospital in Ahmedabad where it has been put in general pool. “It was because the highly educated family took the right decision at the right time that a life could be saved. It is great to see a doctor donating his organs to save life. It is a great example for the community,” said Dr Kamlesh.
