Chandigarh: A fire safety audit conducted by the UT health department in April has found that hospitals are well prepared to deal with fire emergencies, with systems in place for the safety of patients, staff and employees. Evacuation maps to be followed in case of fire have been pasted on the premises.

The report found that Code Red teams have been formed in all private hospitals and fire safety teams have been made in government hospitals. Fire safety equipment has been installed in all hospitals and their functioning is checked regularly. Fire safety drills are being conducted in all hospitals, under which all the systems, from fire alarm to watering and evacuation through fire exits is checked.

“The equipment has an organised preventive maintenance schedule that is recorded. Stickers pasted on the equipment, showing the date of preventive maintenance check and the next date for maintenance,” said a UT health department official.

Fire safety sessions and mock drills are organised from time to time. “Fire extinguishers have regular preventive maintenance schedule and stickers are pasted, showing the date of checking and the next scheduled date,” said the official. The report also found that the staff was aware of fire fighting systems and responsibilities during fire emergencies, evacuation routes and techniques, besides being conversant with the type of fire extinguishers and their area of use.

They were trained to operate fire extinguishers, understand code announcements and assembly points in case of fire. Emergency exit signs are displayed prominently. Oxygen gas plants were found to be well equipped. They were checked on site and all the instruction posters were pasted by all hospitals.
