Pikeville, KY – UPIKE Athletics has announced the restructuring of its men’s and women’s soccer programs in a move to individualize and improve. The shift retains the coaching staff, with long-time program leader Gary Warford named head coach of the women’s team, and former assistant Shaun Schetka taking the reigns as head coach of the men’s team.

Dr. Warford, who has been with UPIKE soccer since 2011, will return focus to the women’s team which he has been with for 10 seasons. Coach Warford is the winningest coach in program history for both programs.

“This is a really big step for our program, allowing each coach the ability to focus on a single program and really connect with the student athletes,” said Director of Athletics Kelly Wells, “We are excited for Coach Schetka to grow in his first role as a head coach after spending five seasons in the assistant role. This move alleviates the strain of heading two programs and allows Coach Warford to focus on the women’s program where he started with us.”

Schetka has served five seasons as the assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs and has aided the development of the program’s only two-time All-MSC Goalkeeper and the all-time leading scorer in the men’s program history. Before coming to UPIKE Schetka was the head women’s coach at Penn State Beaver where he led the team to a PSUAC Conference Title in 2015.
Schetka is excited about the opportunity.

“First, I’d like to thank Coach Wells for trusting me and giving me this opportunity. Also, I couldn’t thank Coach Warford enough for taking a chance on me and allowing me to grow and learn as a coach. I look forward to focusing all of my time and energy on these guys to mentor them and help them reach their goals both as athletes and as men. I believe in our group and I can’t wait to see what we can do as a program”
– Head Coach Shaun Schetka
