Uncapped fast bowler Josh Tongue included in England squad for Ireland Test | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: In a notable selection move, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday included uncapped fast bowler Josh Tongue in England’s 16-man squad for the upcoming one-off Test against Ireland.
The 25-year-old Tongue, who has yet to make his international debut in any format, has made a strong impression with his performances in the County Championship Division Two this season.
Representing Worcestershire, Tongue has showcased his talent by claiming 11 wickets in the competition so far. Additionally, he exhibited his potential during an England Lions Test victory over Sri Lanka in February, where he took an impressive eight wickets.

The solitary four-day Test against Ireland is scheduled to take place at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground from June 1 to June 4. This encounter will serve as a vital opportunity for Tongue to display his skills on the international stage and potentially make his mark.
Following the match against Ireland, England will dive straight into the highly-anticipated Ashes series against Australia, which comprises five Tests. The opening Test of the Ashes is set to commence at Edgbaston on June 16, intensifying the excitement among cricket enthusiasts.
With Tongue’s inclusion in the squad, there is palpable anticipation surrounding the young bowler’s debut and the impact he could have on England’s fast-bowling arsenal.

England have had injury problems in the lead-up to the Ashes, with fast bowler Jofra Archer ruled out of the series and fellow quicks Ollie Robinson and James Anderson returning from injury issues.
“It is important to have players ready to respond and with a big summer of Test cricket coming up, we will need that depth to our squad. We wish Josh and the rest of the squad well for the first international of the campaign,” England men’s selector Luke Wright said.
Cricket Ireland also confirmed a late change to their squad on Wednesday, bringing in seamer Matthew Foster in place of Conor Olphert, who failed to recover in time from a knee issue.
