UC Falls To 2nd Ranked Tennessee Wesleyan In The NAIA Tourney

Kingsport, TN- UC dropped today’s game against Tennessee Wesleyan 14-1 at the NAIA Opening Round. The Patriots committed five errors in today’s loss and got out hit 17-9.
Thomas Gutierrez got the start on the mound and pitched 3.2 innings allowing five runs on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout. Caleb Plummer came in relief and pitched 3.1 innings giving up six hits for six runs but only four was earned. He also came away with three strikeouts. Jared Shelton also came in relief and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two strikeouts. Shane Jones came in to make his first appearance of the season to get the last out in the top of the ninth.
In a slow offensive game, Sean Cheely was the only Patriot with multiple hits as he went 3-5 with one double. Raphy Almanzar scored the Patriots only run by way of a solo homerun in the first frame.
In the bottom of the first Almanzar stepped to the plate and hit a solo shot to left center to take the early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the top of the second and never looked back. The Pats was able to get runners in scoring position but could never get any runs home to score, while Tennessee Wesleyan scored runs throughout the game to win 14-1.
UC we be back in action tomorrow at 11 am facing the winner of game six in a win or go
