Ads will show up after you book a ride or place an order on Uber or Uber Eats, and they may also appear in search results on Drizly, an online retail app owned by Uber. Additionally, some Uber cars may have tablets that display ads.
Starting this week, users in the US will begin to see video ads on the app while waiting for their ride, and may also see them during the ride. The company plans to expand the ads to other markets, including the UK, France, Australia, and other countries later this year.
When using apps during an Uber ride, video ads will be silent unless you are in a car with a tablet. These ads can last up to 90 seconds. Users usually spend around two to three minutes on the app during their 15-minute ride. According to Mark Grether, the general manager of Uber’s ads division, the ads can be targeted toward you based on your location, destination, and previous activity. Also, these ads will not limit access to safety features.
According to Uber, the company will not share personal data with advertisers. You can choose not to receive targeted ads based on your demographic data and app activity. However, it is important to note that you cannot completely opt out of ads. Also, it is not clear if the user will be able to close the ad or if they will have to watch the whole 90 seconds of it. What you can do is lock your phone or use a different app.
Since 2019, Uber Eats has featured static ads, and the Uber ride-hailing app started displaying them in 2020. According to Mark Grether, the company is expected to generate over $1 billion in ad revenue by 2024.
