Twitter rival Hive shut down temporarily, here’s why – Times of India
The popular Twitter alternative Hive has temporarily shut down its servers. The company has taken the decision to shut down the app due to the various critical vulnerabilities pointed out by security researchers.
The German collective named Zerforschung researchers have discovered a number of critical vulnerabilities in Hive. Hive recently saw a surge in its user base after Elon Musk took over as the new CEO of Twitter.
In an official blog post, Zerforschung said, ” We found a number of critical vulnerabilities, which we confidentially reported to the company. After multiple attempts to contact the company, we finally reached them by phone and they acknowledged the report.” The report also states that some of the vulnerabilities have been fixed while others still remained not fixed.
The security issue reportedly enabled attackers to access all the data including private posts, private messages, shared media and even deleted direct messages. This also includes private email addresses and phone numbers entered during login. Attackers can also overwrite data such as posts owned by other users. Due to all these reasons, Hive decided to deactivate its servers. As a result, the vulnerabilities can no longer be exploited.
Hive also released an official statement about shutting down the app. The company said, “Hi everyone!???? The Hive team has become aware of security issues that affect the stability of our application and the safety of our users. Fixing these issues will require temporarily turning off our servers for a couple of days while we fix this for a better and safer experience.”
