It was widely reported earlier this year that Twitter hadn’t paid rent at some of its office premises, mainly in London and San Francisco. Now, a new report has emerged which suggests that the Elon Musk-owned company hasn’t cleared certain bills with Google as well.
According to a report by The Platform, Twitter uses Google Cloud services and the contract between the two companies was signed just before Musk took over. The contract is reportedly worth $1 billion. However, as per the report, Twitter hasn’t paid the bills as the contract renewal is just around the corner. If Twitter doesn’t pay the bills, it could “cripple” Twitter’s trust and safety teams. Another report by The Information suggested that Twitter has been working on renegotiating its contract with Google for the last few months. So it may be a negotiating tactic. Neither Twitter nor Google have officially commented on the matter as of now.

Google isn’t the only one whose bills haven’t been cleared

In March this year, The Information reported that Twitter had outstanding dues with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as well. Twitter uses AWS for cloud computing services. The report highlighted that Twitter owed close to $70 million. AWS had signed a contract with Twitter in 2020 which was reportedly worth $150 million. Amazon ended up threatening Twitter and Musk on pulling advertising from the social media platform. It was reported that Twitter had cleared close to $10 million in dues with AWS.
Ever since Musk took over, he has been on a cost-cutting spree and the contract renegotiations could be a part of the same exercise.
Meanwhile, Twitter now officially has a new CEO as Musk has moved into more of a CTO role. Linda Yaccarino has taken over as the new CEO of Twitter.
