Truecaller: Truecaller may work with Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vi to stop SMS fraud – Times of India

0

Caller identification app Truecaller is looking to work with telecom operators Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea in weeding out spam and phishing scams through its artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions.
The Swedish firm has recently launched an artificial intelligence (AI) powered SMS fraud protection solution, which recognises fraudulent senders and messages. The company has already been offering a solution to curb spam calling.
“We have built a solution to respond to (SMS frauds) and to safeguard our users and we’d be happy to work with both the regulator and carriers on this side. In fact, we are in conversations with them,” Nami Zarringhalam, chief strategy officer and co-founder of Truecaller told ET.
When specifically asked if the company is in talks with all the three operators, he said, “Not all three are on the same table, but all three separately.”
The telecom and financial regulators in India are working overtime to curb phishing and financial scams. In fact, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has asked all the telecom operators to showcase their anti-phishing solutions. So far, Vodafone Idea has demonstrated its solution in partnership with Tanla Solutions while Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are expected to do so by next month.
“I think what is really positive is that this area (spam and frauds) has gotten the attention with Trai confirming that this is an issue, and it is causing harm to people. There are so many stories about people, for instance, senior citizens, who lost their savings by being defrauded and then the kind of shame and guilt that they might feel on an emotional level,” Zarringhalam said.
He added that Truecaller is using AI technology for messaging and calling to check spam and frauds and through these innovations, the solution is always one step ahead of where the scammers and fraudsters are heading.
As per estimates, India ranks among the largest markets for SMS phishing, with over six million citizens scammed annually, resulting in an estimated loss of around Rs 15,000 crore. The country’s growing mobile user base and low SMS rates have led to SMS phishing becoming one of the most prevalent forms of scam, say experts.
Truecaller also rebutted privacy fears around Trai’s consultation on calling name presentation (CNAP) in telecommunication networks. “This is a welcome step by Trai as they are looking at this problem and seeing that it is an issue in society that we should try to address,” he said.
India is the biggest market for Truecaller and the company is very bullish about the India opportunity. Recently, the company opened its office in Bengaluru, its first one outside Sweden, housing about 200 employees. Of the 350 million subscriber base, 250 million comes from India. Further, the company has been storing the data of Indian users locally.
