BJP MLAs in Tripura expressed apprehension that political violence in the state has damaged the reputation of the party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and that this will affect the party’s poll prospects in five poll-bound states of the country.
Without naming Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, MLAs of the ruling BJP Sudip Roy Barman and Ashis Kumar Saha told media persons on Tuesday, “The paratrooper leader for his personal agenda and for his popularity among the BJP central leadership is using the CPI(M)-turned BJP goons for turning the election, which once was celebrated like a festival in Tripura, into a fear zone. His days are numbered.”
The leaders said, “We have apprised the National President J.P. Nadda, National General Secretary (Organisation) B. L. Santhosh and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday”. These leaders questioned if the BJP-led government has done development in the last 44 months. “Despite so much political violence in Tripura, the state Home Minister has made no statement. Police turned into powerless tools. CPI(M) goons entered the party and they are being used for political gain”.
Deb is in charge of the Home Department in the state. The BJP leaders added, “Election is festivity in Tripura however this time in the run-up to civic polls on November 25, there is a reign of terror.” Barman had earlier written to the Director-General of Police V.S. Yadav declared certain areas as vulnerable and hypersensitive for ensuring free and fair polls.
BJP in Tripura is witnessing dissident activity. Health and Information Technology Minister Sudip Roy Barman was sacked in 2019. A group of MLA led by Barman had in 2019 moved BJP leadership complaining about the style of functioning of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.
Barman said, “Several BJP workers are of the view that these hooligans are earning bad names for our BJP and the national leaders. But a small section of paratrooper leaders, who are running our party, are childish and have failed to identify our main political opponent.”
The High Court of Tripura on Monday directed the state election commission to make an immediate review of the sensitivity of the areas and polling stations and to make the categories of the polling stations on the basis of the security requirement for ensuring free and fair polls.
Civic polls are slated in Tripura on November 25. Opposition parties including CPI(M), Trinamool Congress, and Congress alleged threat and intimidation to their candidates. CPI(M) has filed a writ petition in the High Court.
