Trinamool Congress wins majority in 102 civic bodies in West Bengal
The BJP suffered a jolt in Darjeeling, Alipurduar and other previous strongholds. It performed badly in state president Sukanta Majumdar’s area of Balurghat, national vice-president Dilip Ghosh’s Kharagpur and opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari’s stronghold of Contai. AITC won 17 of the 21 wards in Contai and BJP got just 3.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee thanked the people for the overwhelming victory.
“I am happy that Trinamool emerged victorious in Contai Municipality. However, the role of the opposition in democracy is significant. We are happy that the opposition has some seats,” fisheries minister Akhil Giri said. Suvendhu Adhikari’s brother Soumendu Adhikari has moved the Calcutta high court alleging rigging and violence. In Kharagpur Municipality, MLA and actor Hiran Chatterjee won a seat. AITC wrested Bhatpara Municipality, another BJP stronghold, along with Barrackpore.
For the first time in three decades, Congress was defeated in the Baharmpur Municipality. There are 28 seats and Trinamool won three seats uncontested as Congress could not file nominations. “Trinamool rigged votes and captured booths during poll day and used force to intimidate candidates,” Congress Pradesh Committee chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged.
Humro Party won 17 out of 32 seats in Darjeeling civic body. Gorkha Janmukti Morcha won 4 seats. “The state government will work in collaboration with opposition. We congratulate Humro Party in Darjeeling,” AITC leader Kunal Ghosh said.
“BJP has lost its position as the main opposition party, as seen in 2021 assembly polls and 2019 Lok Sabha polls. BJP has been wiped out in North Bengal, where it had a stronghold. We can see a new calculation in hill politics with the Humro Party winning a civic body,” poll analyst Biswanath Chakraborty told ET. “There has largescale violence, rigging and booth capturing. It has been proved that Trinamool won using their might, CPI-M central committee Sujan Chakraborty alleged.
