Tokyo Olympics: Satwik-Chirag out of men’s doubles badminton despite winning last group match | Tokyo Olympics News – Times of India
Three teams — India, Chinese Taipei and Indonesia — won two matches each but on better game average, the Taipei and Indonesian team made it to the quarterfinals from Group ‘A’.
Five minutes before the Indians played the Great Britain team, third seeds Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin of Taipei stunned world No. 1 pair of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia 21-18, 15-21, 21-17. Much to the disappointment of the Indians, the match went into three games.
Had that match closed in two games the Indians could have got a chance of qualifying for the next stage.
Indonesia won five games and lost two, Taipei won five games and lost three while India won four games and lost three. Indonesia will top the group ahead of Taipei.
Despite the loss the Indians gave a good account of themselves and can leave Tokyo on a high note as they stunned Taipei team. The latter ousted the world No.1 team on Tuesday
Their poor show against the Indonesians on Monday, proved costly for them on Tuesday. Had they won at least one game against the Indonesians the result could have been different. Chirag getting injured at a crucial stage and allowing the Indonesians to dominate badly affected India’s chances.
Chirag said that they knew about their prospects before the match started. “We knew the moment Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin (TPE) won, we didn’t stand a chance. They won in two games and we won in three. It is quite sad. But unfortunately, even after winning two matches in the group, we don’t go through. But that is badminton and we have to live with it,” Chirag told the BWF website.
Satwik said it was disappointing to see Indonesians lose. “Because of that, we came into it thinking it was going to be our last game in the Olympics. So we weren’t under pressure. We kept it simple. But it was disappointing to see the Indonesians (Gideon/Sukamuljo) lose [just before we went on]. I feel that we have learnt so much from this badminton experience and there are lot of positives to take home,” Satwik told the BWF website.
