TMC takes aim at Tripura to oust BJP ahead of 2023 assembly polls

0
With their target of ousting BJP in Tripura assembly polls in 2023, Trinamool Congress has decided to make its national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee as the main face in Tripura and has formed its core team to focus on the organizational structure in the coming days. Trinamool Congress’ new core team, formed after the preliminary survey by the I-PAC team, will look into the organizational network.

Trinamool Congress’s booth committees will be ready in coming two weeks and Abhishek Banerjee will visit Tripura four times a month. Trinamool Congress’ spokesperson Kunal reached Tripura today for organization work, following Abhishek Banerjee’s visit a week back.

Trinamool Congress sources said Abhishek has been chosen as in-charge of the organizational work in Tripura. Trinamool Congress Supremo Mamata Banerjee will visit and campaign in the state during the polls, but the main responsibility will be her nephew’s.

Prasant Kishor’s I-PAC team has surveyed Tripura and it has been found in the basic survey that people of Tripura have fascination towards Mamata Banerjee but many don’t like the existing leaders in Tripura, who defected from BJP. People have also revealed in an I-PAC survey that they do not like the existing faces of Trinamool leaders in Tripura as a replacement of Chief Minister Biplab Deb. Incidentally, several leaders like Sudip Deb Burman and Asish Saha have defected from one party to another several times, Trinamool sources told ET.

A core team has been formed which include state law minister Moloy Ghatak, Education minister Bratya Basu and Ritobrata Bandopadhyay, a former CPI-M MP who defected to Trinamool Congress, Lok Sabha MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and youth leader Debanshu Bhattacharya Deb, known for his ‘khela hobe’ rap number fame. Abhishek is likely to lead the team.

With Abhishek Banerjee already announcing ‘Ebar Tripura’ (This time Tripura) for 2023, Trinamool Congress wants to utilize the Bengali sentiment as a large chunk of the population in Tripura has immigrated from Bangladesh. The party also wants to tap the Left-minded people in the state and thus Ritobrata Bandopadhyay, who was in CPI-M, has been roped in.

Kunal Ghosh, state general secretary and party spokesperson, has been sent to Tripura today. Ghosh met former Left MP and MLA Ajoy Biswas at his residence, who had considerable hold on the Left-minded people in the state. Though Kunal calls it a courtesy call, sources close to the development said Trinamool Congress intends to bring the Left voters under their umbrella, who were sidelined after veteran Left leader and Chief Minister Manik Sarkar was ousted from power.

Kunal Ghosh took to twitter and said, “I am hopeful that development of Tripura in future will happen under Trinamool Congress after one and a half years, as mentioned by Abhishek Banerjee.”

It must be noted that BJP had won with a whopping poll percentage of 42 percent in the last assembly polls but people had trust in Manik Sarkar’s clean image. So, Trinamool Congress wants to tap the Left vote on their side and appeal to the educated middle-class Bengali, Trinamool sources said. After Kerala and Tamilnadu, Tripura is one of the most literate states in the country.
