Threads users say app is ‘murderous’ for phone battery – here’s how to fix it

Social media users are complaining that the Meta app Threads is causing a massive drain on their phone batteries, but there may be a way to circumvent the issue. A flurry of complaints has surfaced on Twitter – Thread’s biggest contender – suggesting that the application could be accounting for more than half of user’s battery usage.

Though it remains unclear what is causing the issue, cybersecurity expert Jake Moore told the Daily Mail it could be related to negative testing. The blunder has caused dissatisfaction among users, one of whom wrote on Twitter: “I’m not going to use Instagram Threads until… it stops draining my phone battery.”

“Is Threads just… murderous to anyone else’s battery?” quipped a second person.

A third user joked: “Follow me on threads…. Also one 1% battery,” attaching a screenshot of their depleted phone power.”

Another person said: “I deleted it. Why is it pulling so much battery power when you’re not even using it?”

To prevent complications, users have been advised to check how much of the device’s battery the application is using by visiting Settings – Battery.

Information on usage by the application will appear at the bottom of the page. If usage is high for Threads, phone owners can opt out of Background App Refresh to preserve their battery.

Disabling the Background App Refresh will stop the app from checking for updates and settings when it is not in use.

On an iPhone, this can be done by going into the Setting app > General > Background App Refresh > then disabling the toggle.

Android users can go to Settings > Connections > Data Usage > click on Mobile data usage > Select Threads and switch off Allow background data usage.

The platform has become one of the fastest-growing applications since its launch last week, racking up more than one million sign-ups in five days.

One key component of the application’s appeal is that existing Instagram account holders can transfer their following directly to the app.

Brad Erickson, internet equity analyst at RBC Capital Markets said in a Monday research note: “While Threads’ 100 million users in less than a week doesn’t equate to full usage or likely near enough content – yet – it’s certainly off to a terrific start.”
