This is what Google’s AirTag rival might look like – Times of India

Google is said to be working on a location tracking tag, as the likes of Apple’s AirTag, Tile, and Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag. However, not much was known about it until now. The tracker, codenamed “Grogu,” a subtle Mandalorian reference, could eventually be a Nest Tag.
A Material icon for the unreleased location tracking tag on Google Fonts references it as the “Nest Locator Tag.” The icon is similar to an icon of another location tracking tag, the “Nest Tag,” suggesting that the two could look the same.
Nest Tag was launched back in 2017 with Nest Secure, a home security system. However, it is not a location tracking tag but instead used to arm or disarm the security system.
There were rumours that the Nest team has been developing Google’s location tracking tag, so there are chances that the tag will come with a Nest branding similar to other home products of Google. Since the Nest Secure, including the Nest Tag, is being discontinued next year, the team could have decided to borrow the shape and size for the Locator Tag.
The tracker is said to come in multiple colours and include a speaker, similar to Apple AirTag, to help users locate it through sound.
The tracker may have the capability to support both Bluetooth LE and ultra-wideband (UWB) connectivity. Although UWB is known to provide greater accuracy than Bluetooth in locating lost items by giving distance and direction estimations, it has not been used by Google other than for Nearby Share.
The “Finder Network” being developed by Google may not necessarily require UWB, as BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) would suffice. So, the tag may support a wide range of Android devices, including the ones which do not have the UWB chip.
Google’s location tracking tag is expected to debut at the I/O 2023.
