The things that keep Andrew Abdo inspired and entertained
Welcome to Quick Q – Monday Media’s weekly Q&A series dedicated to finding out more about the personalities that matter most in the Australian media landscape.
Every week The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age asks key figures across corporate media, business, sport, federal politics, radio, television and culture to answer a series of questions about their lives, careers, hobbies and news habits.
This week’s conversation is with NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo.
How did you get your big break?
Moving to Australia from South Africa with my family in 2012, it has changed our lives.
Australia is a land of opportunity where everyone is given a fair go.
What are daily news media habits?
Incoming texts! We’re a very publicly facing organisation, so sometimes I wish I hadn’t looked! I always like to end the day with a laugh on the Betoota Advocate.
Which living person do you most admire?
Nelson Mandela has a massive impact on my life and even though he is no longer living, he continues to inspire me. I have so much admiration for Peter V’landys. I’ve learnt an incredible amount from him.
Your guilty streaming pleasure?
Sports documentaries. I can’t get enough of them. From the Last Dance to Drive to Survive.
Which phrase do you overuse?
“I will call you back…“
What did you want to do when you grew up?
Play cricket for the West Indies and then transition to owning a pub in the Caribbean.
