“Our fabric is made from ethically sourced wood pulp through a closed loop process, which means all the waste produced from creating the fibres is repurposed and used again,” says Joel. “We thought if you’re going to make an environmental impact, make it as small as you can, so we don’t use any type of polyester.”
After nearly two years of research and production, Joel and Zac launched their men’s and women’s Slouchies via their online store on October 6, 2021. They almost sold out the very same day, offering lockdown-weary consumers a fresh alternative to traditional pyjamas and track pants.
“I think we knew from the get-go that regardless of whether we had good feedback or not, the product was going to work because we loved it so much. We just believed in it,” says Joel.
Downtime just levelled up
The brand has since expanded into shorts and tanks (with a kid’s line also in the works), and their limited-edition prints have taken social media by storm. With a product return rate of just one per cent, it’s clear Slouch Potato is well worth the hype.
“Zac and I are big foodies, so we did snack foods for the first range, with popcorn, ice-cream and cookie prints,” recalls Joel. “We kept with the food theme because it really resonated with people. Anyone can look at our prints and think, that’s me.”
As well as offering unparalleled comfort to men (who Joel notes have probably never even bought pyjamas before) and women, Slouch Potato pyjamas strive to incite joy. “We wanted to make something that people are excited to wear after a shower,” says Joel. “We want you to be keen to get into them every day because it fast-tracks you into relaxation mode.”
But the pyjamas aren’t just for sleeping in, emphasises Joel. “We wear them all the time. They’re for whenever you’re at home, whether you’re watching a movie or working.” And while each pair of pyjamas are designed to bring a sense of luxury to your downtime, they don’t come with a luxury price tag.
“One of our biggest goals is for every household to own a pair of Slouchies,” says Joel. “We want them to be accessible and affordable. We really just want everyone to experience this product and this feeling. It’s about happiness, not taking yourself too seriously and, most importantly, having fun.”
