Tata Nexon EV MAX vs Nexon EV 2020: specifications

Battery and Range

The battery pack on the new Tata Nexon EV MAX is larger than the older model by 10.3kWh or 33 percent. Where the 2020 Nexon EV held a 30.2kWh capacity of high-density Li-ion battery, the new Nexon EV MAX gets a larger 40.5kWh capacity. The additional battery capacity contributes to the ARAI certified range of 437km on the Nexon EV MAX. This is a boost of 125km when compared to the older 2020 Nexon EV which has a certified range of 312km.

Performance

The new Nexon EV MAX compensates for the added weight of the higher capacity battery with the inclusion of a higher performance motor as compared to the regular Tata Nexon EV. Max gets a 143PS Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor, which develops 250Nm of peak torque. This enables the car to sprint from 0-100kmph in under 9 seconds (claimed) and then go to a higher top speed of 140kmph (electronically limited).

Tata Nexon EV 2020

In comparison, the Tata Nexon EV 2020 develops 129PS of peak power and 245Nm of peak torque. The 14PS power deficit and 5Nm torque deficit, allow the EV to go from standstill to 100kmph in 9.3 seconds and achieve a top speed of 120kmph.

Weight and Ground Clearance

The new Nexon EV MAX carries a heftier set of batteries and more technology, this bumps up the weight of the Nexon EV MAX by 100kg over the Nexon EV 2020. This increment in weight has also resulted in a 10mm drop in the ground clearance of the Nexon EV MAX, which now sits lower at 195mm. The Nexon EV 2020 sat 205mm off the ground in comparison. The boot space is however unaffected despite the larger battery and still holds 350 litres of cargo, which is the same on both the cars.

Safety and features

The new Nexon EV MAX brings the brand up to 2022 standards with the addition of new safety equipment and features. The Nexon EV MAX gets rear disc brakes, ESP with i-VBAC and hill descent control. These new safety features help the Nexon EV MAX to cope with the higher mass it carries as well as the higher performance it is capable of.

The feature list has seen a revision on the 2022 Nexon EV MAX as well. It now gets a jewelled control knob with an active mode display, air purifier, wireless charger, new leatherette seats and front-seat ventilation, multi-drive modes (Eco, City and Sport), cruise control, auto-dimming IRVM, smartwatch integration and Tata’s ZConnect 2.0 that brings along 48 new connected features.

Regenerative braking and charging

The 2022 Nexon EV MAX gets adjustable regenerative braking that was absent in the earlier car. The regenerative braking on the 2020 Nexon EV was non-adjustable and was fixed at a preset level of intensity.

As for the charging, The 2020 Nexon EV takes about 10 hours to fully charge its 30.2kWh battery pack using the standard 3.3kW charger. However, the new Nexon EV MAX takes 15-16 hours to fully charge its larger battery pack at the same speed. Tata hence offers an option for a quicker 7.2kW charger on the 2022 Nexon EV MAX that can reduce the charging time to just 5-6 hours.

Cosmetic upgrades

Tata Nexon EV Max

It is very little in terms of design and styling that sets the older Nexon EV and the fresh Nexon EV MAX apart. Both carry forward the butch and aggressive SUV stance and yet retain a modern appeal. The Nexon EV MAX however gets a different set of 16-inch alloys to distinguish itself from the 2020 Nexon EV. There’s a new signature Intensi Teal colour shade that’s specific to the 2022 Nexon EV MAX model and the new car also gets a dual-tone paint scheme as standard. On the inside, Tata has adopted a new shade of Makarana beige.

TATA Nexon EV Max vs Nexon EV: Conclusion

The Tata Nexon EV Max 2022 comes with an upgraded range, performance, safety, as well as luxury. This makes it a better companion for long travel such as an intercity journey than the Tata Nexon EV 2020. However, it should be noted that EV Max is a quintal heavier than the regular Nexon EV, which is likely to take a toll on the battery especially when you are going uphill. And in case, you are going with the Tata Nexon EV Max base XZ+ and XZ+ Lux variants, be prepared for a long charging time.
