Talk as your animated self on Instagram and Messenger: Avatars now on video call | Digit

Meta has just introduced a video calling feature that allows users to get on calls using their avatars. Yes, you heard that right. This new feature enables users to use interactive avatars instead of their own faces while video calling, you can also use your face though if you want to. This feature helps alleviate the stress of being camera ready for video calls. It is kind of similar to FaceTime’s Memoji.

So, users can easily get on calls now and use their avatars. This allows both parties to have an animated experience during the conversation.

It is not just a random filter, the avatars will feel as real as possible as they will mimic users facial expressions and mouth activities, allowing it to be as lifelike as possible.

And to make it more fun, you can switch to different skins like that of a dog, cat, owl, llama, etc.

And the best part is that this feature can be accessed on both iOS and Android through Instagram and Messenger.

This comes in addition to the animated avatar stickers by Meta. You can easily use them on Stories, Reels, comments, and private messages, both on Instagram and Messenger. These stickers often make it easier to express yourself, making the posts more personalised.

So, if you want to slow clap at a bad joke your friend cracks, you can do that too.

Not just this, you can even interact with your friends’ stickers with the introduction of Social Stickers. Users simply have to use @Tagging to include their friend’s avatar on Facebook stories. The avatars can hang out with each other and share experiences. This is available for 1:1 messages too.

On top of all this, Meta is even testing out a way to help users make their avatars more easily on WhatsApp and Facebook. Users will just have to take a selfie and the platform will generate certain avatar options to choose from, which can be customised further.

This feels like a step towards Meta’s vision of introducing Avatars in the Metaverse.
