T20 World Cup: Roston Chase could be the answer for West Indies against South Africa | Cricket News – Times of India

Are the defending champions missing a batsman of Samuels’ class?
Wasim Akram said the other day in a television interview that Pakistan should try and emulate the West Indian style of never shifting to a lower gear even if a couple of wickets fall.
It’s true that attack from ball 1 to 120 won West Indies the World Cup in India in 2016, but on Saturday, it royally backfired. Being bundled out for 55 against England wasn’t something anybody had thought of and the hammering that their NRR (-3.97) has taken will mean that the defending champions may probably have to win all their next four games to qualify for the semis.
On UAE pitches, 150 is a fighting score, as we have seen in the IPL. But on Saturday, the West Indian superstars, who have been part of the IPL, were not ready to bide their time and build as wickets were falling. In a situation like this, we were reminded of a player like Marlon Samuels, who was the Man of the Match for the West Indians in the two finals they won in 2012 and 16. Samuels wasn’t the superstar in any of those line-ups, but he was the one who could mix caution and aggression beautifully as Darren Sammy’s team won those two World Cups.
In the 2012 final, Samuels scored 76 off 58 balls in a score of 137 on a sluggish pitch in Colombo, while at the Eden Gardens in 2016, his contribution was 85* off 66 balls as Carlos Braithwaite won it with four sixes in the last over chasing 155.
Who could play that role for West Indies going forward in this year’s tournament?
The XI that played on Saturday didn’t seem to have that guy. Everyone was a cavalier, believing he could clear the fence every ball, and it didn’t work out. One man who could probably have done it was Roston Chase, but he was not there in the line-up.
Chase, in a recent interview, has said that he sees himself in the Samuels role. “It’s the role that I played for the St Lucia (Zouks) franchise for the last two years, where I just come in, after the powerplay, get the ones and twos and get the occasional boundary. It’s an easy role for me… With the power-hitting guys that we have in this (West Indian) team, my role should be just to give them the strength and let them do their thing,” Chase, who is yet to make his international T20 debut, said. He was included in the World Cup squad after he became the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2021 Caribbean Premier League, where he was the highest scorer with 446 runs and took 10 wickets at 26.30.
The West Indian captain Kieron Pollard said that they need to “bin” the Saturday show and move on. For that they must be at their best against a gutsy South Africa on Tuesday and it could be interesting if the skipper goes for Chase as the middle-order anchor around the super-hitters.
