Sundar Pichai: AI is a boon: Google CEO Sundar Pichai on use of technology in Search – Times of India
The investors’ call took many cues from Google I/O 2023 where several references about AI were made. Google is working on using AI in Search, which is a big driver in bringing revenue to the company. At I/O, the company also announced Search Generative Experience (SGE), a feature that will make search more intuitive.
“Over time, this will just be how search works. It really gives us a chance to now not always be constrained in the way search was working before. It allows us to think outside the box. We are ahead of where I thought we’d be at this point in time,” Pichai said.
Google has already opened SGE for a few users and Pichai said the feedback they have received has been largely positive.
“We are keeping a very high bar, but I would say we are ahead on all the metrics in terms of how we look at it internally and so couldn’t be more pleased with it,” he said.
AI in Cloud business
Apart from Search, Google is also betting on the use of AI in Cloud business. The company is competing with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure in this space but according to Pichai, AI companies are choosing Google’s cloud technology over competition to run the compute-heavy projects.
Google’s cloud business saw revenue increase 28% in the second quarter to $8 billion. Pichai said that more than 70% of unicorns, or billion-dollar tech startups in generative AI are Google Cloud customers.
“There is definitely a lot of interest from customers on AI and they definitely are engaging on many more conversations with us,” Pichai said.
