Streetwear, luxe and vintage jewellery: Inside a Melbourne author’s wardrobe

0

What are the three essential items in your wardrobe? My black Gloria “Modern Times” coat, which I wear like a blanket, Aeyde clogs with colourful socks, and my Vivienne Westwood tartan sunglasses.

Any go-to jewellery? A Sguscio chunky silver ring with lab-grown peridots and a spiky amethyst necklace – I believe in the power of gemstones.

Can you remember a favourite outfit from when you were a child? A blue T-shirt I wore for years with big letters that said, “Up here for thinking, down there for dancing.”

What was your first fashion moment? I’ve loved fashion for as long as I can remember. I’ve been dressing up ever since I was in kindergarten and had a bowl cut.

And your worst fashion mistake? Some of the jumpsuits I used to wear. I wonder what I was thinking.

What’s at the top of your wish list? I’ve wanted the “Magician” coat by Melbourne designer Kalaurie for years, but I have so many coats and no money in any of the pockets! And I’d love the Camilla “Tether Me Not” shirt-and-pants set – I love chain prints.

Is there something you would never wear? I don’t love brands like Gorman, with their modern, bright prints and designs. I like vintage-inspired prints, or something unique and abstract.

Is there a current fashion trend you like? I love clogs, mules, drippy gold jewellery and flares.

What shoes do you wear the most? If I’m not wearing my Aeyde clogs, it’s a pair of heeled pirate boots with lots of buckles.

Who’s your favourite fashion icon? Timothée Chalamet’s street couture and outrageous suits are so wonderful. Also, Dennis Rodman in the ’90s – lots of fur, sparkles, baggy tees and low-cut saucy numbers with bright hair and nails – and sunglasses inside.

What do wear on a typical working day? When I’m writing, I wear a big shirt, op-shop jumper and pants with an elastic waist. Otherwise, it’s a matching shirt-and-pants set with gold earrings and heels.

What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? A bright sweatshirt, my baggy blue mum jeans and Birkenstocks with socks.

Little Plum (Text Publishing) by Laura McPhee-Browne is out now.
