Storage Saver: All you need to know about the most important feature in Google Photos – Times of India

Google Photos allow users to change the backup quality of their photos and videos to fit their preferences, and to clean up storage space. Every Google Account comes with 15GB of storage. This 15GB storage is shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Starting June 1 2021, Google Photos too have become part of this 15GB quota. This means Google Photos are no longer free. However, High quality (now named Storage saver) and Express quality photos and videos backed up to Google Photos before June 1, 2021 will not count toward users’ Google account storage.
What is Storage saver in Google Photos?
Google renamed its High quality storage tier to Storage saver earlier this year. The feature aims to help users save storage in Google Photos.
What is the purpose of Storage saver?
Storage saver helps reduce the size of users’ photos and videos. If you have photos in Original quality and want to save some storage space, change your already backed-up photos and videos to Storage saver quality. Photos are compressed to save space. If a photo is larger than 16MP, it will be resized to 16MP. As for videos, those that are higher than 1080p will be resized to high-definition 1080p. A video with 1080p or less will look close to the original. Some information, like closed captions, might be lost. Please note that this setting won’t appear if you don’t have any photos in Original quality.
How to switch on Storage saver mode?
  • On a computer/laptop, go to photos.google.com/settings.
  • Click Recover storage.

Will this setting be permanent?
No, the storage saver works only with existing photos in Google Photos. It will not change the quality of users’ future uploads. Also, users can only recover storage once a day.
