Still have the drive and burning desire to play cricket: Kieron Pollard | Cricket News – Times of India
DUBAI: In Rohit Sharma’s absence, West Indies star allrounder Kieron Pollard has led Mumbai Indians on various occasions. In the DP World ILT20, being played in the UAE, Pollard has been given a full-time charge as MI Emirates captain and the swashbuckling allrounder is ready for the new challenge.
“Personally, I still have the drive and burning desire to play cricket that keeps pushing me. As a leader, I am going to continue to guide these guys because they have played cricket before and that’s the reason why they are here. So, it’s a matter of putting all the pieces of the puzzle together and play an exciting cricket that MI is known to play,” Pollard said ahead of MI Emirates’ opening game against Sharjah Warriors on Saturday.
“Pressure is always there, be it any franchise. Having the experience of being at Mumbai Indians for a while, I know what’s needed,” he said.
Pollard has been associated with Mumbai Indians since 2010 and was a permanent face for them till 2022. After playing 13 seasons with the Mumbai-based franchisee, Pollard will be seen in a new role in IPL 2023 – batting coach of the five-time IPL champions. He has scored 3412 runs and taken 69 wickets for Mumbai Indians.
Pollard will be seen as the full-time captain of MI Emirates in the inaugural season of the DP World ILT20. Apart from Pollard, the team has the likes of another star allrounder Dwayne Bravo, Craig Overton, Samit Patel, Trent Boult, Nicholas Pooran, Imran Tahir, and Andre Fletcher.
“It is always a challenge when you have a shorter time to get together and plan for a new tournament. Once you are clear and precise as to what you want, it becomes pretty simple. It’s just a matter of understanding and easing the pressure on the boys in the new franchise so that they can understand their roles. We basically break it down for them,” he said.
